Beyond the folklore, an obvious will of Togolese women to influence from now on politician decisions
Like their counterparts of the continent, Togolese women celebrated this 31st July, for the 45th time, the African Woman Day under the national topic « Women and Good Governance », in line with the regional topic « the pauperisation of the continent, which economic development for Africa: challenges and stakes ». Women’s participation in good governance is a topic of current interest especially during this pre-electoral period leading to the reconfiguration of the Parliament and the renewal of the political circle.
The celebration of this year was taken to an exceptional dimension in that it provided women with the opportunity to formally hand over a package of grievances relating to their priority needs and to firmly express their availability to contribute to the search for ways and means to realise the well-being of women and the entire population.

Women’s participation in governance: Good practices from Mauritania
Mauritanians seize the opportunity presented by the transition that followed the military putsch in August 3rd, 2005 to work on improving the participation of women in politics and better acknowledging women’s priorities by the elected leaders. To this effect, they initiated two steps that would be taken as good practices from which one can draw inspiration for women’s future participation in governance. The first step was to plead for the adoption of a law that institutes a quota on women’s participation in the electoral processes. The plea got to the level of a vote on a law related to the promotion of women’s access to elected terms of office and elected positions at the level of the Parliamentary Assembly and Municipal Services. Thanks to this law, the representation of women in the national assembly has risen from 3 to 18%.
They had additionally elaborated a charter to be signed by all of the candidates at the presidential election planned for March 25th, 2007. The charter aims for different candidates to commit to adopt measures concerning certain priorities identified by women once they are elected. The principal candidates already signed said charter. We wish the best for our Mauritanian sisters.
